Introduction for the College of foreign languages and cultures
The School of Foreign Languages and Cultures was founded in 1996. Back then it was known as the Department of Foreign Languages of Beijing Wuzi University, which was its predecessor. In 2011, it was changed from a department to a school and got its present name, which isoften referred to by its shortened form, i.e.the Foreign Languages School. The School has three teaching departmentsincluding the English Department, the College English Teaching and Research Department, and Culture Communication Teaching and ResearchDepartment. There are two administrative institutionsincluding theAdministrative Office andStudent Affairs Office, and two auxiliaryeducational institutions including Language Teaching Experimental Center and ArchiveRoom. Currently, there is a business English undergraduate major with 325 undergraduate students on campus.
The School currently has 71 faculty members, including 63 full-time teachers, 6administrative and auxiliary teaching staff, and 2 laboratory managers. Among the full-time teachers, there are 3 professors, 25 associate professors, 32 lecturers, and 2 teaching assistants. Among them, one holds the title of Young Top-notch Talent of Beijing, two hold the tile of Young Talents of Beijing and five hold the title of Young and Middle-aged Backbone Talentsof Beijing.6 teachers have been awarded doctoral degrees and the remaining teachers all have got master degrees. 26 teachers have either studiedabroad and or been visiting scholarsinthe U.K., the U.S., Canada,Australiaorother countries.
In all kinds of teaching awards and appraisal activities at various levels, the number and the ranking of awards of our schoolare bothNo. 1 in ouruniversity. Among the teachers in our school,a total of 28 teachers with anaccumulative58 person-times have won the “Top Ten Most Popular Teachersof Beijing Wuzi University”, “Top TenExcellent Teachers for Undergraduate Teaching of Beijing Wuzi University”, “Outstanding Teachers of Beijing Wuzi University”, “Advanced Individualsfor Undergraduate (Graduate) Teaching of Beijing Wuzi University" or other honorary titles. A total of 25 teachers have won awards in the Young Teacher Basic TeachingSkills Competition of our university, and 4 teachers participated in the Beijing Young Teacher Basic TeachingSkills Competitionrepresenting our university and won prizes( 2 first prizes , 1 second prizeand 1 third prize). In the past five years, the teachers of theSchool also received 7 awards in the courseware competitionhosted either by Ministry of Education or by the Beijing Municipal Government, 8 awards of various types of teaching competitions at and above the Beijing municipal level, 15 awards for teaching achievements within our university, and 31 awards for outstanding teaching reform projects within our university. 1 person has got the honorary title of Excellent Cadre of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, 1 won the title of Excellent University Counselor awarded by Beijing Municipal Government, and 4got the title of Excellent Class Head Teachers awarded by our university.
The School places special emphasis on scientific research. In the past ten years (2007.1.1-2017.12.31), teachers of this school have published 1,239 academic papers at various levels in domestic and foreign academic journals, i.e.20 per capita, of which 677 are core journal articles, i.e.11 per capita; 167 different works have been published including monographs, translations, compilations, teaching materials, reference books, etc., with 2.5 per capita, of which there are 35 academic monographs, 50 translations, 82 other authored works and teaching materials, etc.; this school undertakes12 longitudinal scientific research projectsat or above Beijing Municipal or Bureau-level and 14 scientific research projects at the University-level; ithas introduced37 social horizontal research projects and 14 scientific research achievements won the research awards ator abovemunicipal or bureau level or awards from industry associations.
In terms of foreign cooperation, the School has established cooperative relations with several universities such as Acadia University in the United States, Napier University, University of Central Lancashire and University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom, etc. Students can obtain twoundergraduate diplomas, one from Beijing Wuzi University and the other from foreign universities, through the “3+1” model; they can also obtain both a bachelor degree diploma from Beijing Wuzi University and a master-degree diploma from a foreign university through the “3+2” model. Since 2016, the School and Kent State University in the United States have established an ESL semester exchange student cooperation program to achieve mutual recognition of credits forundergraduateEnglish majors during their studies in the United States. To date, the schoolsent a total of 20 English undergraduate students to study in Kent State University.
The School pays a lot of attention to nurturing talents and combines extra-curricular activities with the cultivation of students’ professional interests and the practice and application of theoretical knowledge. There are various extra-curricular activities, such as "FreshmanSeason" to cultivate freshmen's knowledge about their major, "English Corner" to stimulate students' interest in learning English, Summer Social Practice to achieveeducation goals onprofessionalism and mission, "Foreign Languages and Culture Month" to develop students' ability to use English skills and expand their international horizons, and volunteerism to shape thecharacter ofdedication andfraternal cooperation of foreign language majors. In various professional competitions, such as National English Competition for College Students, National School Students English Reading Report Competition, ‘CCTV Cup’ English DebatingContest (CCTV means the China Central Television Station), ‘SFLEPCup’NationalEnglishSpeaking& WritingCompetition, the ‘FLTRP Cup’ English Public Writing & Speaking Contest, and English Speech Contest for Beijing College Students, our undergraduatesall achieved excellent results.
The School also pays a lot of attention to the cultivation of students' practical ability. Each year, the School recommends students to several well-known companies for internship, such as New Oriental Education & Technology Group (EDU) in Beijing, New Auto Media, Hilton Hotels, Lenovo, KPMG, Deloitte, Amazon, Siemens, CCTV,Youku, YeePay, Anheuser-Busch InBev, UFH, Adfaith, and BlueFocus, laying a solid foundation for the improvement of students’ professional abilities and the selection of employment orientation. While cultivating the motivationand practical abilities of foreign language majors, the colorful second classroomunites people's hearts, gathers strength, stimulates vitality, and stages a broad arena for students to display their talents.
As of 2017, the School has seen the graduation of undergraduates of different classes of 15 years. The graduates’ degree awarding rate ranks among the top of theuniversity, the employment rate is maintained at more than 95% every year, and the employment contract signing rate is maintained at between 85% and 95%. In the past 10 years, every yearabout 50 graduatesfrom the School were enrolled by the graduate schoolsof various universities, such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, Zhongshan University, Beijing Normal University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Communication University of China, and China Foreign Affairs University. In addition, every year there are more than 10 students going to the U.S. the U.K., Australia orother countries for further study.Students already employed are workingin China Radio International, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Organizing Department of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, State Grid, China Mobile, China Telecom, KPMG, Deloitte, HSBC, ICBC, Agricultural Bank of China, China Construction Bank, China Everbright Bank, China CITIC Bank, Lenovo Group, CAAC, Hainan Airlines, Shell and other famous companies at home and abroad.
